What is a Budget?
An introduction to our new, 5-part series that will walk you through how to build a budget.
The word "budget" can bring up a lot of different feelings. Maybe you grew up hearing your parents or grandparents talk about bills at the kitchen table, maybe you've tried budgeting before and it didn't stick, or maybe no one ever taught you how to manage money and the whole idea feels overwhelming. Wherever you're starting from, you're in the right place.
A budget isn't about restriction or perfection. It's about knowing where your money goes so you can say yes to the things that matter most to you.
At its core, a budget is simply a plan for your money. It helps you see how much you have coming in, how much is going out, and what's left over.
A budget has three parts: income, expenses, and savings:
Here's the simple math: income minus expenses equals savings (or debt). A budget helps you see that clearly so you can make choices that match what matters to you.
